SSI: Supplemental Security Income by State
SSI is the disability program that doesn't require a work history β it is based on financial need. The medical standard is federal and identical everywhere, but the money isn't quite: some states add a supplement on top of the federal payment, and some add nothing at all. Choose your state for the local figure.
The most common reason people never apply
βI haven't worked in years, so there's no point.β That reasoning rules you out of SSDI, which is credit-based β but not out of SSI, which isn't. Homemakers, long-term unemployed workers, and people whose credits lapsed years ago all routinely qualify.
The trade-off is that SSI is means-tested, with a $2,000 resource limit for an individual and $3,000 for a couple, excluding your home and usually one vehicle.
