There is no list of conditions that qualify you automatically, and the sites that publish one are misleading you. Social Security decides the overwhelming majority of claims on what a condition stops you doing — not on its name. Below is how the agency actually evaluates each of the conditions people ask about most, including the evidence that decides a claim and the specific reasons each one gets denied.
The diagnosis is rarely the deciding factor
Social Security keeps a Listing of Impairments — the “Blue Book” — describing conditions and the severity that meets the standard on medical evidence alone. Meeting a listing is the fastest route, and a small number of very serious conditions are additionally fast-tracked through the Compassionate Allowances program.
But most approvals do not happen that way. Most turn on residual functional capacity: what you can still do, for how long, and how reliably, five days a week. That is why two people with identical diagnoses routinely receive opposite decisions — and why “does my condition qualify?” is the wrong question to start from.
