The neurological listing looks for disorganisation of motor function in two extremities resulting in an extreme limitation in standing up from seated, balancing while standing or walking, or using the upper extremities — or, alternatively, a marked limitation in physical functioning together with a marked limitation in one area of mental functioning. Sensory symptoms alone, however unpleasant, rarely meet it.

The evidence that actually decides it

Examiners work from documents, not from how you feel on the day. These are the records that carry the most weight in a peripheral neuropathy claim:

• Nerve conduction studies or EMG confirming and localising the damage
• Examination findings on strength, reflexes, sensation, and gait
• Documentation of falls, balance problems, or assistive device use
• The underlying cause where known — diabetes, chemotherapy, autoimmune disease

Why peripheral neuropathy claims get denied

Most denials are not a judgement that you are able to work. They are gaps in the file. The recurring ones here:

• Numbness and burning documented without motor findings
• No objective nerve testing in the file
• Symptoms confined to one extremity

If a claim was denied for one of these, appealing is almost always better than starting over — you have 60 days from the date on the letter, and appealing preserves the filing date your back pay is calculated from.
